To Peter, Adrian, Paul and John:

Thanks for your tips. I didn't find a 9600 manual at LEM though I HAD read
the upgrade info before. I'm going to try the OS upgrade (from a complete
iMac software install CD purchased from OWC) and see how that goes.
According to the Charles Moore article at
http://lowendmac.com/misc/04/1213.html I can go directly from 8.6 to 9.1
without trying to find 9.0. Any opinions on that?

Also, now that I'm looking at the Lite-On CD/R, I'm not sure it will
actually fit in the 9600. It seems too small. I'll have to call OWC about
that -- they told me it would work. Hmmmmmmmm!

The OS 9.1 iMac disk should work great for you. That is what my 9600
installed from. it is more stable than prior installs. And your
upgrades machine has the RAM to handle the OS overhead.

And yes, straight to 9.1 is the way to go.

Re: the Lite-On . This is the first time I ever heard a 9600
referred to as too small. My friends think the case size is
monstrous!
Isn't the Lite-On a standard size drive ?

And RE: the PTPro200 in the other post. Simply doing a preliminary
install decision could not have damaged the hardware oth the PTP.
Something else happened. A PRAM or NVRAM write operation so the boot
OS didn't recognize the hardware or some such.
Or a coincidental loose card or cpu. Something !

There are only simple explanations. Install disks don't go around
damaging hardware!
