http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=51132 Definitely get the OS 9.1 CD. You'll need to update to OS 9.1 anyway if you had an OS 9.0 installer. The early versions of OS 9 had some issues. Then you can get the OS 9.2.1 & 9.2.2 updates downloaded with the OS9Helper application or you can stay at OS 9.1 depending on your needs. The Lite-Ons are the same as any normal Optical drive and will fit your 9600. Some drives have a larger door that slides out and hits the bezel but that is easily fixed with a file.
