Respect!

Thanks for walking us thorugh that. I feel lucky that I've never had a
machine I've cared about in an area that I didn't control access to.

Security aside, one thing the end user who started this thread may want to
consider is the purchase of a "junk" keyboard for use by the niece. I'm
sure we've all had the pleasure of using a computer that a
soda-swilling/candy-eating someone-or-other has used before us (yuck!). Not
to mention that kids spilling things near computers is almost a given.

A "no drinks on top of the monitor" rule should be thought about, too. I
know that the thought of someone perching their drink on top of the monitor
sounds silly, but it has happened.

According to the profile of the Performa on LEM, it has a DB-25 SCSI
connector on the back. If that's the case, it may well support an external
Jaz (removable media) drive. I would check with the appropriate mailing
list to see if anyone has done this successfully. If this is indeed an
option, you would be able to use either 1 or 2 Gig capacity Jaz cartridges
that you'd be able to take out/lock away without the hassle of opening up
the machine itself to mess with the hard drive. If you get the later model
drive Jaz drive, it uses either 1 or 2 gig carts. The earlier model drive
accepts a 1 gig cart only.

You know, the more I think about this, the more that Colin's "lock it in the
closet idea" appeals to me...

Best,

James
