At the suggestion of a couple of people, I checked the Memory Control Panel.
The 'Startup Memory Test' option was turned on. Turning it off solved the
problem! Thanks to those who attempted to help me find a solution. Is this a
great list, or what?

By the way, to see the Startup Memory Terst option, hold down 'Command
(Apple)' and 'Option' keys when opening the Memory Control Panel. I could not
find
any reference to this in any of my Mac books.
