  You might've fried the SCSI circuitry...  If you want to email me offlist, I 
have a couple 9600's that I'm parting out, as well as a spare 9600/200 board 
that I don't need.

  I did this same thing to an old IIsi.  The cooling fan for the system is 
powered by a couple contacts on the board that mate with two prongs on the 
bottom of the fan assembly.  Well, my IIsi's fan would keep stopping.  Found 
that if I slapped it downward lightly, it'd make contact again and start 
working.  Probably should've taken it apart and cleaned everything instead, 
though.  Since, one afternoon, I did it a little too hard and shorted the 
external SCSI connector with the prongs.  Got the sad mac tones of death, then, 
it would turn on, fans would start, hard drive would spin up, but nothing else 
would occur.  The SCSI chip had been fried.  Was cheaper to find a good used 
IIsi then to have this one resurrected.
