I have purchased a 20" LCD screen (coming soon!) and am thinking of
something a bit more more than my onboard 7600 vram (4MB) or the 8MB Twin
Turbo. This screen has 1 x 15-pin D-sub, 1 x 24-pin Digital DVI-D, 1 x
S-Video, 1 x Composite Video, 5 x USB (1 Upstream and 4 Downstream). Any
recommendations for a Mac PCI video card that is not too expensive (I might
not have this screen on this machine for all that long...)

(recently saw an ATI 16MB card go for about $40 on ebay... would this sort
of thing be ok, I don't play games...)

The ATI Rage 128 will work fine. Try to go for one out of a Rev 2 B&W G3 as they are slightly faster than the Rev 1 versions. However, that still won't be best for your display. You need something with DVI for the best image. For that, you should pick up a Radeon, Radeon 7000 (actually worse than the original Radeon in terms of performance), or the best (and only?) current PCI card - the Radeon 9200.

I've got a 9200, and I'm reasonably satisfied that it can drive two displays in OS X on my B&W with the Quartz Extreme hack enabled. I also own a Voodoo3 2000, and I'm really upset with the quality of the image in games like Unreal Tournament. The Radeon bites compared to that Voodoo card. The 3DFx cards are tops in my book! It's really a shame that nVidia won't support them with further driver development...

Peace,
Drew
