Optical mice do not work well on varied colors. Solid colors are best.

An old complaint mystery about my mouse speed is solved I think!

I found out why my Apple Pro Mouse went slower than what one would expect. I
am a bit ashamed to tell you. In fact, I can't get myself to tell you.... I
won't tell you! .... er... No I must, it is my duty. Gee, this is hard!

Um, er.... it does not like the mouse pad! It feels smooth enough but there
is uniform friction! In fact, it is quite fussy, it performs best on the
pine coloured, pine wood top of the desk best. Fancy that eh? That wireless
one I tried from a visitor was unaffected by surface. And was so much faster
that I reinvestigated...

Thanks for the frank honesty and sharing David. Confession is good for the soul.

I haven't used a mouse pad in years. The two I had seemed to fray and fall apart and the folded top fabric would get in the way.
It became apparent that it worked quite well without the pad. I even wore the top printed wood grain off of one cheap desk.

A softer surface would be nice but I never found a pad I thought would last long or give the right feel for very long..

And I hardly ever have to clean the ball anymore. There's no abrasive fabric to rub skin flakes and hair from my hand to clog the works.( yuck!)
