I realize my reply might have been ambiguous...to recast: Once you have your
LaserWriter driver (software) installed, you have to connect the printer via
the appropriate printer cable, with AppleTalk turned on. Then you should be
able to see the LaserWriter in the Chooser.

It also helps to have a PPD for the specific printer in your "Printer
Descriptions" folder in your "Extensions". You might be able to find one
frome the manufacturer. If not, you may have to use the "Gen. Eric" one.
(Reference in this to good Ol' General Eric to avoid certain complexities of
modern email life...)
