It may be possible.  the XLR8yourMac web site has some instructions where you 
can edit a plugin, replacing one model CDR for another, adding it as a 
supported 
drive.  The plugin name has CDR and the manufacturer in it so do a search for 
either CDR or the manufacturer to see those plugins.  I used HexEdit as the 
instructions recommended...and be sure to keep a copy of the original plug.

Note: Keep the original CD-ROM also.  I can burn CD's, but reading from the 
drive is problematic, which I assume is from the fact that the plugin has a 
higher read rate in the model I replaced.  I use the internal ROM ones for 
reading and the external R ones for writing.

I have done this for my Yamaha 4260's in both OS 10.1 and OS 10.2 on otherwise 
stock PowerMac 9500's running XPostFacto.  Its the way to go.
