I cannot sit back any longer. AFAIK there isn't any virus, worm, or trojan horse out there that Macs have to fear. Unlike the PC world eg. when my brother-in-law and his tech set up a new hard drive, they apparently had to drop the security (no router) to allow downloading of some sort of updates. Within a minute of connecting on- line they had been attacked and infected with some sort of nasty something or other.

Not to poke fun at the expense of our PC counterparts, but, I believe all the hype about viruses for the Mac is simply a case of misery likes company.

There are many ways to minimize unwanted attention, personal firewalll protection is a good idea. I know it's standard in OS X, but am not sure that it is native in OS 9. The risk probably lies in hackers rather that virus threats. Don't let someone "sell" you on the need for virus protection. If I didn't use OS X and have a router, I would seriously consider some sort of personal firewall just to be on the safe side. As for viruses, worms, trojan horses etc. the Mac OS has very little to fear. IMHO you have a greater threat by NOT backing up your data than you have to fear from viruses and the like.

Just my 2ยข worth
