Hmmmm... is it possible for you to put it in another SCSI Mac or even a PC
with a SCSI card? That would eliminate the posibility that the SCSI
controller has failed. If the disk appears in the PC you might be able to
use HFVExplorer to view files - unless it is HFS+.

Without doing something drastic - if you have access to a PC with SCSI and
LINUX or, say, BeOS, you could attempt to take a RAW dump of the drive using
the dd command. This may also work from MacOS X if the computer in question
has SCSI. The dd command is a standard part of BeOs R4.0 onwards and LINUX
ad infinum.

For BeOS is would be something like:

dd of=/boot/home/backup.img if=/dev/disc/scsi/??/??/raw

where the ?? are BUS and LUN's (BUS would normally be 0 unless you have more
than one SCSI BUS and LUN should be readable from the jumpers on the disk.)
LINUX would be a completely different '/dev/../..' path.

The dd commany is able to read and write to unmounted disks, so long as the
disk is healthy enough to allow the process to gain the data.

Under BeOS you might also see if you can fix the partition map or possibly
mount the partition (DriveSetup is your friend here, but only if the volume
is not HFS+ as BeOS can't mount HFS+ volumes - for HFS+) with your data on
it. You may also be able to just copy that partition (instead of "raw" you
would specify the partition number - easy enough if there is only one,
though apple style partition maps are slightly more painful because of the
disk drivers etc sitting in mini partitions of their own.)

This all might work for BeOS PPC too, but your mileage may vary. The problem
with BeOS on a Mac is that BeOS relies on OpenFirmware and the MacOS
bootstrap to reliably inform it about the hardware present. If MacOS doesn't
like the drive, it may not appear as an option. If you do manage to get the
above to work on PPC but the volume is HFS+ (Appple Extended) then not all
is lost. You can use SheepShaver to boot from a version of MacOS that is
prior to 9.0 (8.1 - 8.6) and read the HFS+ volume that way.

This will all probably work with LINUX PPC too, but you'll have far less
gray hairs if you don't have to install it just to do this.

Hope that helps,

Matt
