Not too long ago I was in your shoes, airport cards are extremely expensive (for a single income family with two kids) and I really needed wireless access. After searching locally I ran into roadblock after roadblock. It seems 802.11 Pci cards for macs are a bit spotty at best. One revision may work, one may not. I know that a few companys make cards specifically for Macs, however they cost the same as an airport card.
Long story short, I saved up and bought the airport card for 80 bucks. I cannot tell you how great it works and how happy I am with it. I plugged it into its little slot and poof it works. Having the antenna built in was a big plus for me, considering my children think antennas are great things to yank on.
