Use what you have (your G3/300) and save all the money for a newer Mac.
Just my 2cents opinion.

The problem here being that if you do a complete update you will have to
update your current software library!

Old software will not run on Unix(system 10). This is the main drawback for
me updating. It would simply cost too much. I run Three Daystars loaded.
Plus three Sgi Machines with real Unix. So why update.

my ha'penny worth.

You can get newer machines that run OS 9 though, if you really care about classic software - everything up to the FW400 Mirrored Drive Doors G4s run 9 natively. They use DDR ram (though that's not such an advantage with an SDR system bus), and a 166MHz FSB making them significantly faster than any upgraded oldworld Mac.

Any AGP PowerMac would probably work out much faster, though it's worth getting a Digital Audio or QuickSilver since decent AGP 2x-compatible cards for the Sawtooth and Gigabit are getting hard to pick up these days wheras you can use even very modern cheap reflashed PC cards with the AGP 4x G4s (Radeon 9800pros, GeForce 6800s, etc). A QS with one of the dual 7447 1.4-1.8GHz G4 upgrades would probably work out quite competitive with a G5 for most tasks, almost certainly embarass an iMac G5 for anything non-FSB thrashing but still run OS 9.
