I have OS 7.5 on a CD. If I buy a new CD drive for this computer will
it load 7.5 since I have this XLR8 card in it? Then could I download
updates form apple to update it to OS 9?

yes there is a way to reinstall the os on the same disk as is your
data - you choose "create a new systemfolder" on the os 9 install
disk, but sometimes a bad system disk needs to be reformatted from
zero,
was it a 7600 ? or 8600 ?
how much ram do you have ?
does the xlr8 card have any software that it needs to be loaded
during startup ?
you could always try to load the 7.5 cd if its an install cd, I dont
know if I remember correctly but the first version of os 7.5 did not
work with the 7600 at all, it would state that the chosen startup
disk didnt work on that computer, and you needed to update from 7.5.3
to 7.5.5 or so, before you would get that new system to startup.
so it depends on what is on your cd,
it may not be the fault of the cpu card if it doesnt do so.
to have some ideas to play with
i would if my economy did not allow lots of tryouts
get an extra hd - a used one would be quite cheap, a
scsi and the same with the cdplayer, you mite be able to find
someone that will give it for free, or very little,
did you open the computer and checked the cables and stuffs inside -
if it is a 7600 it is quite easy to take a peek inside, - the 8.600
is quite another story
i am using a 7600 right now and its a great machine, i use it
aswell as a stereo player for my music collection and cds !
why cant apple let 8.6 be a free os !????
