so I'd need an upgraded video board for the video stuff... I am
thinking that this is not such a great spenditure of $$$.. it would
be nice to get 10.4 onto the 8500 w/ G3 +.. but.. eh... it seems to
be not so important. the data part will work though... would it
boot off a CD/DVD?

OK... so I want to know if an older SCSI based DVD player would
work in an older Mac device, say.. like an 8500 with a SCSI bus< I
have seen a couple on ebay, and now that I think about it it would
not work with the built in Video board??
I wish to have a DVD player on this older mac... ability to play
video is secondary...
It will work fine as a data drive. In order to play DVDs, you will
need an appropriate DVD decoder and the correct software. The
Radeon line (original Radeon, Radeon 7000 and the Radeon 9200)
includes a decoder. Here are instructions for the software for OS 9:

Note that unless you have upgraded the processor in your 8500, the
odds are that DVD playback will be less than optimal. It was
marginal on a beige G3 266.
