Power Mac G3 server video issue (This message was also sent to the G-list digest)
Hello, All. I would like some ideas on what may be causing a video problem with a PM G3 server. Purchased a Beige G3 minitower server on eBay. Super machine, excellent price and fully functional. Configuration is as follows: 6GB IDE HD MAC OS 9.1 G3 300MHZ On board video 192mb RAM 8MB SODIMM VRAM CD ROM Asante 10/100 Enet card (PCI Slot 2) To this configuration I have added: 256MB RAM DIMM (all mem slots are now occupied) MAXTOR 60GB IDE HD SONY CD-RW/DVD-ROM (Here comes the problem) Sonnet Tempo Trio Combo card (ATA/33, FW, & USB 2.0). The above SONY and MAXTOR drives are connected to each IDE channel on the Sonnet card as MASTERS. The SONY uses the original cable that came with the card. The Maxto is connected to a longer IDE cable that I purchased from MacMall. In addition, I removed the audio cable from the stock CD-ROM and connected it to the SONY CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. Whenever I place the Sonnet card into the Mac, there is no video and it does not boot (start-up chime is normal). Remove the card, and video returns, however very slowly and the Mac starts up, normally. If I remove the 256DIMM, the machine starts up normally w/o any hesitation. It is my understanding that this particular revision of the G3 server utilizes IDE controllers on the logic board (source MacGurus.com). Could there be some type of conflict w/the Sonnet combo card? Since there are only 3PCI slots, I really would like to use the Sonnet combo card. This would leave me one extra slot, and in addition, I can use OS X on this machine w/o any modifications, true(?). Any ideas or suggestions (free of liability) are appreciated. Thanks rkayblock -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
