Hmm, not sure about a USB drive, however it is possible using a FW DVD 
drive attached to a FW PCI card. I installed Tiger on my 9600/G3 using an 
external FW DVDR/W drive, XpostFacto uses a bit of HD space as a helper 
to get it started.

I'll be interested to hear if a USB card works, give a try, eh?
