Summary
Saturday, March 23:

26 teams competed in the South 5 Designate; the final leg of the Pacific
Coast's South Series and a required attendance regatta for PCCSC north
schools. The regatta saw University of Washington visit from the Northwest
as well as first time team, Westmont College compete.

The morning of Saturday, March 23rd saw a light 4-6 knot breeze from the
southeast; promising pressure, but not a promising direction. Despite that
fact, the RC and racers headed out to try and take advantage of the breeze.
By the time the racers got out, the breeze had died down a bit, but held at
3-5 knots to get some races started. The course was visited by a whale, a
school of dolphins, and several seals who seemed amused (or annoyed) by the
boats being in their waters.

The day was filled with large shifts and light air initially, and slowly
built over the course of the afternoon eventually shifting to a westerly
direction at 8-10 knots and cooling down substantially. It allowed teams to
compete in extremely versatile conditions from the beginning to the end of
the day. The RC was able to get off 7 A races and 5 B races by 5:30 pm.
University of Washington jumped out to an early lead and continued to
maintain it over the course of the day followed by UC-San Diego and
UC-Santa Barbara.

Sunday, March 24:

Day 2 of the South 5 Designate saw more early light winds, however this
time while racers were still on their way out to the course, the breeze
died completely and led to an on shore postponement. Around noon, the
breeze began to shows signs of life and within 30 minutes had clocked
around to the west building eventually to 10-12 knots. The shorter time
frame with which to get races done left the RC pushing hard to get races
off, but in the end, they were only able to get an additional 5 B races and
3 A races. The standings were close going into the last few races, but
University of Washington held on for the win with 90 points, followed by
UC-San Diego with 99 points, and UC-Santa Barbara with 102 points.

Congratulations to all teams and welcome to newest PCCSC associate member
team, Westmont College, from Santa Barbara, California!

Thank you to UCSB Alumni RC members Scott Deardorff, Jon & Lauren Bell, as
well as SBYC members John and Karen Long for the donation of their time and
their boat to do RC.
