I think this issue should be resolved prior to 0.9.9 release.
It's a critical bug which blocks a new release.
I'll find some time to work on this.

BTW, I updated the makefiles a little today.
Now "make distcheck" should be happy about the changes.
Please test the new makefiles. Thanks!
