Would it be better to handle visibility on the linker side? I think that will be less invasive -- all the visibility will be controlled in one place, the Makefile. I'm thinking something like what we do here: http://code.google.com/p/google-ctemplate/source/browse/trunk/Makefile.am with CTEMLPLATE_SYMBOLS.
