Talking about the proposed api, i would like to suggest that part of this
should be an adaptation of a php-like wrapper for the most basic functionality.

The direct calls for the more involved parts would pronably benefit from some
wrapper that would extend the life of current applications, but there should be
a time limit, saying that this would not be supported after 20xx.
the two wrappers above would give two venues.  Simple uses would never have to
worry  about compatibility and sophisticated uses will have a grace period to
adapt.
i was exploring an adapptation of the php library but since i am not a c
developer, it proved to be beyond my abiliyties.
