I am currently doing major work in the 10.xx series and I will ensure that this is all Perl-compatible there. (A quick test shows that both [\A-C] and [A-\C] are treated as [A-C] in Perl.) I will (eventually) look at this in 8.39 as well, and if there is a trivial fix it might get done before the next release.
