I have lost familiarity with the old code, which in PCRE2 has been refactored and tidied and generally made easier to maintain. Certain issues cannot be fixed in PCRE1 without major refactoring - this may be one of them, though I cannot remember for sure. So, unless somebody else steps up and offers to take on the maintenance of PCRE1, I regretfully have to agree with you - there is not much point in reporting PCRE1 problems.
