Having recently set up a home network with two Win98 and one Win95 machine,
I have some questions which I hope networking gurus on the list can help me
answer.

Printer, drive and file sharing all work well so far -- I can access all
remote drives and printers, including external Zip drives, from all three
machines, and Internet Connection Sharing is a doddle! Now these other
questions spring to mind ...

1. Can machine A, with a faster processor, usefully run a program hosted on
machine B, which has a slow processor? Or vice versa? In other words,
should one assume that the processing speed depends on the actual machine
being used to run the program, irrespective of where the application is on
the network?

2. Can execution of programs be split between different machines -- i.e.
SMP, symmetric multi-processing? I would assume not, on a simple Windows
network, but one never knows ...

3. CD, CD-RW, external Zip drives, and of course printers can all be shared
on whatever machine -- but what about other peripherals, such as scanners,
USB and SCSI peripherals? Does anyone have any experience with these?
Assuming they can be "seen" by other machines, can the software be run
remotely, or does it have to be installed on each machine individually?

4. How far should each PC be installed with its own apps (office
applications etc.) - or can these be run across the network from machines
which have bigger HDs. I've noticed that many simple programs will run
perfectly across the network whereas others will do so only if the relevant
.dlls are present in the Windows/System directory.

5. Finally, (perhaps Gerry Boyd can help me here), I have one more machine
using OS/2 and Win3.11 which I'd like to network to the others, but I don't
really know how to go about it -- can't seem to find much information on
protocols etc. for non-windows PCs. Any help would be appreciated.

I guess the basic Windows peer to peer networking like I've set up is
pretty limited, but I'd like to know what others on the list have achieved.
Thanks for your feedback!
