Richard, I had a somewhat similar problem once. Eventually I figured out 
that it happened only when a utility called Eyedrives was running in the 
background.  Eyedrives is a nice little program (free) that shows a lot of 
info on memory and drives.  (http://softtalon.com/) But I've learned not to 
run it in the background.  You might try turning off other programs one at a 
time to see if the problem goes away.  HTH, John.
