hey Lee.....does this happen in ALL documents or just one particular
document?......try it in a blank document and see what happens.....if it
only happens in one, the document may be corrupt......have you tried
changing the font from the format menu instead of the toolbar?....try
highlighting some text and going to Format>Font and make a new choice and
then click on the button that says "default" and see if this makes it
change......another thing that can mess up fonts in word is a corrupt temp
file....try deleting temps and reboot (full instructions for deleting temp
files are on my website at
http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm )........if
that doesn't fix it, close word, search your hard drive for normal.dot and
delete it....this is Word's global template which Word will recreate when
you open it again....open it and see if that fixed it...if that doesn't fix
it, it could be the data folder in your registry
close word.....backup registry....navigate to HKEY_CURRENT
_USER\software\microsoft\office\8.0\word (or it might be word, then
8.0....I'm on Windows 2K now with Office 2K so I'm doing this from
memory).....but, find the folder in there called "data" and delete
it.....restart word and it will create a new one.....word stores a lot of
settings in here so the new one will have word's defaults
hope one of these fixes it for ya...I would try them in this order

Subject: PCWorks: cannot change the font in word 97
hi group
have a computer with office 97 which will not allow the font to be changed
in Word. Excel is fine, I am able to change font or apply effects (bold ,
italics) but in Word- no changes. Remains on what looks like Ariel 14 bold.
I tried reinstalling Office, but no change. I uninstalled and then
reinstalled. still unable to change the font in any of the normal ways (by
highlighting or by trying to change the default)
any ideas where or how I can correct this?
Lee
