To one and all,

I got a VERY weird and strange problem develop on my system at work, and
I STILL have no real idea what was the cause of the original problem.

My system was originally my head managers - he got a new one, and so I
got his old one. It is a HP Kyac (am doing this at home, so can not
remember how to exactly spell the exact name). Do to work he has, he
transferred all his critial files over to media, wiped the system
totally clean, and then we did a totally fresh install from scratch. We
put on Win2K, Office2K premium, and other programs as needed for our
department work.

The problem is most people in the entire company still are using
Office97 (I work for a branch of the state of California, in IS/IT
support and development, and licenses are involved), so I had to
uninstall Office2K and install Office97 Pro to do development work in
Access97. Now comes the start of the problem.

One of the main items you are supposed to be able to import into an
Access table is from an Excel spreadsheet. Unfortunately, this was one
of the MAIN things I could NOT import into Access after the
uninstall/install procedures. There were other issues but this was the
key one that had a great effect on my work - had to convert the
spreadsheet into text, and then import the text into Access. No one had
ever seen this problem before of non-import of Excel into Access. After
some major problems most recently, I finally had to back up as much of
my personal data, take screen shots to remember what existed where, and
then wipe out the system partition. After a total re-install of Win2K,
installing updates, installing other software, and their updates, and
finally Office97 Pro, and its updates, everything works in Office as it
should totally. ESPECIALLY everything in Acess.

So does anyone have any idea WHAT could have been the cause of the
original import problem??? Everything I looked at with various system
tools showed that I should have had absolutely NO problem importing from
Excel into Acess. The only thing I and others could figure out was there
was some problem in the registry that was the cause, from the Office2K
uninstall, but since I have never seen any materials, unlike for my
Win98 system here at home, of how to deal with the registry on a Win2K
system, I had no idea of where to look in the registry with regedit, to
see if there was some wrong or corrupted setting in the registry.

As a side note as well, does anyone know of any books that deal with the
registry and its settings in WinNT4 and Win2K???
