Karl......in Win98, the easiest way to edit the system.ini file is to go to
your start button and click on Run....type in msconfig and click on the
system.ini tab

or, you can open Notepad and go to File>Open and browse to find system.ini
and open it in Notepad

Since the system.ini file is in plain ASCII, can you use a
conventional text editor? I'm curious since in my system
(Win98SE) I found the following in my system.ini file:

; *** DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE! ***
;
; This file was created by the System Configuration Utility as
; a placeholder for your SYSTEM.INI file. Your actual
; SYSTEM.INI file has been saved under the name SYSTEM.TSH.

I was unable to find the above mentioned system.tsh file.

Thanks,

Karl
