I believe that you will have to remove both versions before you can
install just office 97.  You may not be able to uninstall the xp version
now that you have installed the 97 version, but check the add/remove
software for the Office XP version.  Did you get the cd for that one? 
If so, the remove is usually part of the setup for the program.  As
long  as any part of xp is there, it will try to do the registration
bit.   If you have a program remover such as cleansweep, you may be able
to get rid of it with that.
