Thanks, Linda, but this didn't work. I now notice that I can't even type an
email message in Outlook Express. The last active field I can access is the
"subject" one, when I compose a new message.

Since this computer has the default Win98 SE version of IE, its uninstallation
too is disabled, so I cannot even repair it as Jeff suggested.

Beats me what could turn IE/ OE to a read-only mode. The security settings
seem ok.

Maybe I'll try installing either IE 5.5 or IE 6 if nothing else works.
