My house has a 4-telephone line cable coming into the NID. There is a second smaller NID to split 2 of the lines from the first 4. Just looking at 1 line (phone and DSL combo) these come into my basement and meet a Seicor DSL splitter. A picture of this is at http://store.psg-usa.com/ The splitter essentially is in-line filter that is in line with all phones in the house. In my case actually only one of the 4 phone lines. From the splitter, the lines go to wall jacks which have two RJ11 connectors -- phone and DSL. My telephone is plugged into the phone side and the Acatel 1000 DSL modem is plugged into the data side. >Gerald E.
