I have a Compaq Presario 5140 computer, Win 98 and am having problems. I
had a new hard drive installed and during that time, I got an external hp cd
d writer 8200 series. I didn't have any problems. Since then I got a new
computer built. When doing so, I had the new hard drive taken out of the
Compaq Presario. When re hooking of my cd writer, I had major problems.
All of a sudden I got this message when trying to boot up, "Write Protection
Error, please restart your computer." However, each time I do, I got the
same thing.

I had the person who did the work take the computer and he was able to fix
it without reformatting the hard drive. I decided not to try connecting the
cd writer again until my brother came to town. He is now in town (at my
parents) so I thought it safe to go ahead and try again. I figured it
probably was something that guy had done when he took out my hard drive from
the old computer. But when I installed the cd writer, the exact same thing
happened. I tried putting a Windows 98 cd in the cd rom but it doesn't read
it. It continues to give me the same error message.

Have anyone had anything like this happen? I was hoping to see if I could
get if figured out before my brother comes over since he will also be
spending a lot of time networking for me.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
