Hi PC-Workers,
Have a Dell Dimension 4100 series, Pentium III Processor 933 MHz,
128MB SDRAM and it came with Windows ME factory installed. I'm not
very enthused about W-ME and I would like to uninstall it and then
install W-98SE. ME has a lot of things on it that I have no use for
and never use. There is no uninstall option. Contacted Dell support
and was told by the technician that I could not uninstall ME, that
it would cause all kinds of problems and that I should reformat the
hard drive or just install W-98 over the top of ME. (I had a hard time
understanding the man because he had such a foreign accent.) He said
he would send me an e-mail with instructions how to do this. I never
received the e-mail. When I ran the W-98 disk it told me that I could
not downgrade to an earlier version of windows.

A few days later I called Dell again and spoke to a different Techni-
cian who informed me that I had to call Microsoft because it was their
software, which I did. The MS tech said I could not just uninstall ME,
but he would explain to me how to put W-98 on the machine in what he re-
ferred to as a parallel installation and then I could delete the ME
files
later if I wanted to. He explained that I would have to download all of
the latest drivers for W-98, which would take quite a long time. When I
do all of that I'm supposed to call MS again and the tech I get to talk
to will take me through the rest of the job.

According to information I got from a google search there is an
uninstall
option with instructions, but it has to be saved at the time of
installa-
tion, which Dell evidently did not do. Probably on instructions from MS.

I am wondering if there may be any other options, like adding another
hard
drive with W-98 on it and making it the "C" drive??? BTW, the drive on
the
machine now is a 20GB with no partitions---just a "C" drive.

Any and all input welcome and appreciated.....thank you.

Bob
