Matt, Sounds like your CD Writer is bad. I experienced the same type problem with an HP 8100 writer that was only 13-months old. Not only was I having problems much like yours, but before I realized that it was a problem with my CD writer, I slipped my Win98SE system disk in to restore a file and it trashed my Win98 System Disk. I replaced the CR-RW, but NOT with HP. I have also had regular CD drives go bad and act the same way, and using a cleaning utility was no help.

It is recommended you move all critical data off immediately." After a couple of occurrences of this, and I attempt to insert the CD again, the system will hang as the disk attempts to access non-existent (or at least non addressed) data. Even if I remove the offending disk, the system will stay in an almost hung status. The cursor will respond jerkely (word?) and only after several seconds (5-30) has elapsed since I moved the mouse. If I insert that same disk into my laptop I get similar results. As far as I can tell, disks that were burned on my laptop can be read on both machines indefinitely.
