Peter.......I wrote an article on Word Troubleshooting for Neat Net
Tricks.....it sounds to me like you have a corrupt global template
(normal.dot).....search your hard drive for it and delete it...then try
opening Word and it will make a new one

if that doesn't fix it, here's the article I wrote so you can try some more

Subject: PCWorks: Word 2000 crashes


I have Word 2000 and recently have been unable to open it without it
crashing and producing the following message "WINWORD.EXE has created
errors and will be shut down by windows. You will have to restart the
program."  I've installed Service Pack 1 and 2 with no effect, as well as
running the repair feature and uninstalling all of Office and
reinstalling.  All other applications in the suite function properly.  Any
idea's would be welcome.
