Having just built myself a smashing new machine (1.4 Ghz Athlon, 256 Mb RAM, Epox M/Bd, plenty of room for expansion etc.) I need some advice on how best to set it up as a dual-boot system with Win98SE and Linux.(+ possibly OS/2, though this may be difficult or even impossible :-(
Two HDs are installed, one 4.9 Gig (master)and one 17 Gig (slave), both from previous machines. I've backed up all the old stuff from them and wiped them clean. Actually I fdisked the 4.9 Gb into 2 partitions (FAT16) with a main and extended partition (the latter divided into 2 logical drives). The second hard disk I have left unpartitioned, unsure what to do with it - it was originally set up as a non-DOS disk because I tried unsuccessfully to install OS/2 on it. Of course all this can be changed, as I have no idea how best to install the OSs with a dual-boot system. I know Windows has to be installed on a primary partition, but I know nothing about Linux so far. What is the best boot manager to use, and how does one go about setting it all up? What would be the best way to partition the disks? My own preference is always to have several smaller partitions rather than large ones where things are inclined to get lost. I know I should research this matter myself, but I am floundering in the dark with matters still outside my experience, so what I really need is moral support and guidance from a few experts who have been through it all and have a similar setup. Please email me off list if you think it's better. Thanks for your input.
