Hello listers! I finally chose to install Windows 2000 about a week ago. All was well until I decided to copy some programs from my "C" drive on to my "D" drive and execute them. One of the programs was X-Setup from Xteq and I started to tweak some settings. One of the settings I tweaked was in the System plug-in for Windows File Protection and ever since then i have had to re-install the OS 6 times in the last 8 days. HA HA HA! I'll laugh before you all do.
So after learning ALL there is about restoring and installing this d*mn program, I finally got it to work properly without having to restore it. LOL BUT, every time I use my tape backup system, it locks up and then opens and locks etc. It completes the backup but takes 3 to 4 times as long as is necessary. So when I wake up in the morning the backup is complete but the processor is alternately churning away. Thsi brings me to my question to any of you in the know about Windows 2000, whenever I attempt to shutdown or even restart this is where the kernel gets corrupted and I have to try to restore the system using the Emergency Repair Disk which had been fruitless in the past. Can someone tell me besides logging off and then restarting how this process called "Windows File Protection" be killed without killing the Winlogon process and ending up having to re-install the OS? I have done lots of research but no solution other than Logoff and then restart. this seems to be very inconvenient in regards to the wonderful reputation that Windows 2000 enjoys.
