Clint,
I have found that I TOTALLY agree with you with regard to the updates page
on Microsoft web site - I have NEVER gotten any of their so called driver
updates to even download to begin with, let alone install. After reading
your horror stories, I am very glad they never did download to begin with.
I am still to this day wondering what in the world the other language
downloads really do for you to begin with - these are the ones usually for
menus (I guess) in a number of other languages. Once in the past I
downloaded them and did not see anything on my system at all except just
add something to the system tray which I could never figure what I was
supposed additional capability, along with taking up space.
I KNOW when I have had to reinstall Win98 and Win2K, a commmon update that
I will NEVER again download is the idiotic update to let you know there are
new updates to download. This program seems to ALWAYS somehow activate
right at the WRONG moment, right when I am doing something important on my
system and dont want to be disturbed - if I dont immediately go to the
update site, it will always keep disturbing me until I do so. Since I
generally always go to the site on a regular basis anyway, to check and see
what new and wonderful in Microsoft's eyes, the update reminder is just a
royal pain!!!!

You need to click the "windows update" icon in the start
menu, then at that site click 'product updates' and it will
tell you what you need. BUT, be SURE to read what I posted
on the update site. I no longer have the emails, but it
would be in the archives. You should be able to search
subject lines for things like:
update
update site
warning
I think those were in the subject line. You will NOT *need*
EVERYTHING that they list at the update site. STAY AWAY from
'driver updates'. You should read what it says carefully
about each update it says you need to see if it's applicable
for you (for her) computer setup.

hi to all...
my mom has a PC running Outlook Express version 5.5
she lives in another state and I wanted to help her update
whatever
security patches she needs for her eMail program...
she has never done one before...
I went to the site:
www.microsoft.com/security
I could NOT find anything to update the version 5.5
I did see the oldest thing I could find was version 98
she downloaded that
but when she went to RUN the program it gave her a message
saying
her system was NOT the same... she did not have version 98
any suggestions ?
where can I find the necessary UPDATES for security
for the Outlook EXPRESS 5.5 version... ??
thanks in advance...
(her old computer has version 5.1 --- but she uses the
computer with the
5.5 version the most... ultimately I should probably have her
take care of
both computers...)
