Ralph,
To answer your question about the Language downloads.
Folks that download programs in ANOTHER Language
probably need the "language fonts" from these upgrades???

There's apparently NO need for anyone else to download these
unless they intend to use a different language.

I NEVER select any of these language downloads, and I
have never had any problems with Microsoft upgrades either, as
a few others have mentioned.

I also use Win-Me & Win-XP as a dual boot on two systems, and
contrary to what a few others have mentioned about having problems
with ME, I have used this system since it came out over a year ago
and have NEVER had a problem with it on any system. I have installed
and used ME on 6-8 different systems with no problems. In fact, ME
loads faster than XP on the 2-dual boot systems.

Clint,

I am most thankful that you can check or uncheck the boxes at the site,
since there are others as well I never have and never will download, and
get tired of seeing them constantly showing up on the update page.

BUT, I still am wondering what in the world do all the lanuage downloads
that show up on the update page are actually for - have any idea??? They
sure dont seem to do anything from what I have seen in the past, even if
you download any of them and have them installed.

Yeah, that's the 'critical update notification'. I never
install it. Not needed unless you can't remember to do
anything to update your PC. What I also do is uncheck the
box in msconfig for 'task monitor'. That is not needed and
just something else running in the bg. The first thing I do
at the update site is 'personalize' and uncheck the box for
languages, then I never have to see them again. :)

Clint,

I have found that I TOTALLY agree with you with regard to the
updates page
on Microsoft web site - I have NEVER gotten any of their so
called driver
updates to even download to begin with, let alone install.
After reading
your horror stories, I am very glad they never did download
to begin with.

I am still to this day wondering what in the world the other
language
downloads really do for you to begin with - these are the
ones usually for
menus (I guess) in a number of other languages. Once in the
past I
downloaded them and did not see anything on my system at all
except just
add something to the system tray which I could never figure
what I was
supposed additional capability, along with taking up space.

I KNOW when I have had to reinstall Win98 and Win2K, a
commmon update that
I will NEVER again download is the idiotic update to let you
know there are
new updates to download. This program seems to ALWAYS somehow
activate
right at the WRONG moment, right when I am doing something
important on my
system and dont want to be disturbed - if I dont immediately
go to the
update site, it will always keep disturbing me until I do so.
Since I
generally always go to the site on a regular basis anyway, to
check and see
what new and wonderful in Microsoft's eyes, the update
reminder is just a
royal pain!!!!
