I wanted more info on the "refuses to reconnect". Normally, you shoould
see a windows that explains the error or hear sound(?) from the modem.

The magic word. Internal modems can cause problems like this one in
several cases.

Could you please try issue AT commands to your modem? You can do this by
"Direct Connecting" with HyperTerminal.

What I meant was, an "internal" modem.
