Seeing as the router should go between the modem and the computer, it would be a bit difficult to use the internal modem. Be sure that you deactivate the internal modem if you go the router/external modem bit. If you do use the internal, then it would be connected to the internet and the router out of the first computer. That computer would then be serving as a server and would not be protected by any internal firewall that the router would have. My suggestion would be to go external, then the entire network would be protected by the router with builtin firewall.
