This still isn't working.
I have no idea what the problem is.
Some of my data is 9-1959, 9-1969, etc...those try to come up as dates
automatically, but I can still fix this by selecting the individual cell,
formatting as general or text, then it will keep.
But, 25E5 will always be changed.
If I change the cell to general or text, type or paste that in, 25E5 is
changed
right away.
If I clear the contents and go to change format, I see scientific highlighted
always, so it keeps changing on my.
I know you kind people say this doesn't happen to you, but trust me, it is
happening here.
I've tried "paste special" and select 'as text', same thing, the data is
changed
to scientific and I'm not scientist, so I need my values in there.
Thanks to all of you in your attempt to help.
If you come up with any other ideas, feel free to email me.

<<Typically any information you enter in a cell is stored as a number>>

Is this true? Are you saying if I open a new blank worksheet and type
the word Linda in cell A1, it is stored as a number?

That's a new one on me. That's why I thought it was weird that Excel
would convert 25E5 to a number cuz it leaves Linda as text.

Linda

When you think about it, this behaviour isn't really weird, it is pretty
logical.

Typically any information you enter in a cell is stored as a number,
even
though is may be displayed as something else. "Text" is stored
numerically
but treated specially so that digits can be displayed either as text or
numbers.

Jeff, The only explanation I can give is that Excel treats 25E5 as a
scientific number which is 2.5 x 10 to the minus 6 power. The E is translated

by Excel as the exponent. (5). It then moves the decimal to the left and
makes 25 into 2.5 and adds another power to 5 making it 6. When you format
for "number" it converts the 25E5 to 2,500,000 which would be correct. If you

are trying to enter 25E5 as an absolute I do not think it will work. What is
25E5 suppose to mean in your words?

Correction on what I wrote it is not "Minus" but "Plus"
sorry LarryB
