Regarding my original question on the effectiveness of "older" backups,
I know from using registry cleaners (EasyCleaner and RegCleaner) that
changes are constantly taking place in the registry. Does restoring such
a registry *after* using the computer (installing, deleting,
configuring, and whatever one does with the computer) make sense? Yes,
the restored version might work but not with all the changes that took
place in it between the time it might have been injured (euphemism for
corrupted) and the time you restore it. What happens to all the changes
that took place in the registry in that "corrupt-restore" interval? It's
a moot question; I was just curious.
The Registry is simply a database used to store settings and options for Windows. It contains information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of the PC. That's it.

So, if it contains all this information and you want to be able to "go back" (restore) the system to some exact place and time, then it makes sense to only change the system ONE item at a time and then make a registry backup. If you make more than one change then yes the restoration process will skip all the other changes.

You should be using the restored registry to "go back" to when it worked properly. If something happens to the system when you are "fiddling" you want to be able to restore back to the "un-fiddled" state when everything worked properly.

In your case, every time you start "regedit" to tinker with the system, you should be making a copy of the registry BEFORE you begin. In that way, you could go back to a working system if you happen to make a mistake and the system doesn't work properly afterwards.

Simple rule: "Before making changes to the registry, make a backup copy."
