Not sure what you mean by "archiving", unless you just mean backing them up. Yes, the thumbs file is a hidden file and can only be seen when 'show all files' is selected. It can only be deleted from a folder if that folder's view as thumbnails option is NOT checked. The thumbs file is only created in a folder after view as thumbnails is selected for the first time.
If all you want to do is copy the images to a CD, then just "select all" in the folder then right click and drag to the CDRW shortcut icon, and 'copy here'. If the option to show all files is OFF, you don't have to worry with the thumbs file.
