PCWorks: Scanning old negatives

A good friend of mine has a large collection, ie. thousands, of older 
negatives. Some 35 mm but mostly 20 mm, 110 film etc. He wants to save as 
many of these to a digital format easily and without breaking the bank to 
do it either. Preferably he would like it to be in USB 2 form and 
compatible with both PC and Mac as his wife has a Mac.

Any idea's would be most welcomed.
