You have received good advice about your
clock/CMOS battery. I would like to add the
following to it.
You should check your users manual and/or the
motherboard maker about changing the battery.
If you can find the battery and remove it for replacement,
it is possible that your CMOS will lose information and
will have to be reprogrammed. You should record the
information in your CMOS so that it can be replaced if
it changes while the battery is being replaced. There are
programs that will backup the CMOS information and
check if it has changed. They will also bring the CMOS
back to its original state.
When you replace the battery, carefully note the
polarity of the replacement so that it is the same as
the one that is removed.
Sometimes the battery is soldered
in place which makes it tricky to replace.
If you can change the battery quick enough, there is a capacitor
in the circuit that will hold its charge long enough to keep the
CMOS from losing its programming. That time can be measured
in minutes, not seconds. However it is always
a good idea to check the CMOS after changing the battery.
