Hello again; hope you don't mind this added request.

Elmer, I need help. What's missing in your instructions is
detail. Many ideas were suggested which I'm sure all work, but
for me, your idea is the best of what was submitted (Linda and
Leo agree). But you are assuming I know more than I know. What
I need is a step by step plan on what to do. I don't know
anything more challenging than explaining technical material
in email. Ill repeat the problem:

I'm using MSWord 2000 and I have a list, let's say four lines
in the list (actually a lot more). Note that for the example
below, I'm using an even number since someone mentioned tables
and an even number in tables looks best. What each line
consists of is a text, space, three dots, space, URL ... A
short version would look like this (these are not the actual
URL's):

This is Chrysler http://www.chrysler.com/
This is Ford ... http://www.ford.com/
This is General Motors ... http://www.gm.com
This is IBM ... http://www.ibm.com

And what I want to so is (withOUT working on any individual
line, dragging, etc.) switch the text with the URL so the list
would look like this:

http://www.chrysler.com/ This is Chrysler
http://www.ford.com/ This is Ford
http://www.gm.com This is General Motors
http://www.ibm.com This is IBM

Among other techniques, I'm told that the Find/Replace feature
in MSWord (with the accompanying More/Special tabs) can be
used to do the job. I won't confuse the word, tabs that I
just used with the Tab Character in the Special column. I
know this Tab Character, indicated by a ^t (shift-6 followed
by a t), as you explained below, will come into play in the
instructions. Now this is what you wrote:

"Use Find & Replace to change all of the ... to tabs Convert
the text to a two-column table using the tab-delimited option
Swap the positions of the columns Convert the table back to
tab delimited text Use Find & Replace to change all of the
tabs to ...

When you are in the replace window a tab is indicated by a ^t
(shift-6 followed by a t) this character pair is used because
the software will not allow permit you to enter a tab (or a
carriage return) as part of a string. Click on the "More"
button on the Replace dialog box, then the "Special" pull-down
menu for a list of the other characters that you have to do
this with. You don't want to use the one under the Format Tabs
because this one is for changing the format not replacing the
characters.

That first paragraph of yours threw me. Now starting with the
four original lines, I'm sure you, or some other MSWord
expert, can explain the tabs and tables step by step (which is
the way I explain things to my daughters; for which they hate
me because I'm so pedantic). Not what should I do about my
daughters but what should I do to reverse the above list ;-)

An aside to all it wasn't easy bringing up kids starting in
the 60s, and I'm sure it's much more difficult today, and
with this information explosion (and the internet with all
it's temptations), it's well nigh impossible. But that's
another newsletter; I won't go into that Harold in Brighton
