Switching Columns In A List With Some Character Between Them (with Msword) Elmer Tibbets sent me detailed instructions with an attachment. Im adding additional detail (in lieu of the attachment) for anyone interested in how this was resolved. Some have asked why I want to switch the text and URL columns. Answer: The list had almost 200 URLs and I knew some were repeated. The best way to find the repetitions was to put the URLs in the beginning of the line and then alphabetize the list. That put all the same URLs together (easy with MSWord).
REMOVING THE CHARACTER (whatever separates the two parts of the line): 1. Highlight complete text and go to Edit>Replace (or press Control H) 2. In Find line type in whatever you have separating the two columns. 3. For Replace line go to More>Special>Tab Character (or type in ^t which is Shift+6 followed by t) 4. Click Replace All MAKING A TABLE: 5. Now highlight the text and go to Table>Convert>Text to Table>Separate text at> and check Tabs 6. In Table Size, designate the number of columns 2 and click OK. SWITCHING THE COLUMNS: 7. Select the second column and drag it over to the start of the first block in the first column or select the first column and drag it over to the end of the block in the second column. REMOVING THE TABLE: 8. Highlight the text then go to Table>Convert>Table to Text>Separate text with> and check Tabs REPLACING THE CHARACTER (whatever separates the two parts of the line): 9. Highlight both columns and go to Edit>Replace (or press Control H) 10. In Find line go to More>Special>Tab Character (or type in ^t which is Shift+6 followed by t) 11. For Replace line type in whatever you removed in Step 2. Hope I didn't leave anything out; the columns are now switched (I understand the same can be done with macros and with Unix; alas, I dont know how). Thank you, Elmer (and all who were helping), and lets not forget to thank M$ for making this possible. Bill gets a lot of negative blasting on the internet but lets remember that his foundation gives and is giving most of his moolah to all kinds of charities, and eventually most (in proportions almost all) will be going back to the people. And what has M$ given to the world computerwise? More than most people. He hires the best and produces the best thats free enterprise at its best. Well, thats only my opinion ...
