Hyperthreading is a way for one processor to act like two. You may not notice it but if you run a lot of programs at one time, it's great and you really never have to wait for a program to finish. You never get that hour glass. I have the same processor on the machine I'm using right now and really like it.
Reformatting would probably do for most people getting rid of data especially if you are giving it to your niece who isn't going to run a data recovery program on the hard drive. If you have especially sensitive info though you can run a program like BCwipe on those files and it will do a pretty good job. It's shareware but is fully functional for 30 days. I'd use it or something like it on data files, mail, etc that you don't ever want anyone to see and then just format the hard drive to erase the rest of the stuff you don't care about. You can find BCwipe at http://www.jetico.com/index.htm#/bcwipe.htm . Once you install it, you get a right click menu option to erase with BCwipe. The actual truth is the only way to completely protect stuff from a determined person is to take a sledge hammer to the hard drive. If you are on a dial up, configuring your own connection is easy. When you get there, we can give you step by step instructions and what information to copy from your old computer and then how to set it up on the new machine. So when is the new machine coming?
