Thanks Ben and Elaine.
I have checked and found my keyboard is in the start menu and it does refer
to IntelliType Pro in the Key
settings in the control panel.
The mouse settings  make no mention of it so I assume it must be the
keyboard.
However  there are no settings to stop it updating that I can find.
Both items are of the wireless type.
